4-Inch vs 8-Inch Floor Sofa Cushions: Which Thickness Should You Choose?

Choose 8-inch cushions for a main living room, for adults who sit for hours, and for anyone who finds it hard to get up from the floor. Choose 4-inch cushions for a traditional low look, a prayer or kids' room, or a tighter budget.

Choose 8-inch cushions if the majlis will be your main seating, and 4-inch cushions if you want the traditional close-to-the-floor look or a lower price. The footprint is identical. The difference is seat height: 8 inches (20 cm) versus 4 inches (10 cm).

Seat height comparison of 4-inch and 8-inch floor sofas and a regular sofa

Which is more comfortable?

For most adults, the 8-inch. Twice the foam under you means your hips sit higher than your heels, which takes pressure off the knees and lower back. People who sit cross-legged or kneel are comfortable on either.

The complaint we hear most from people who bought a 4-inch set for a main living room is that it is lower than they expected. If you are unsure, go with 8.

Which is easier to get up from?

The 8-inch, clearly. A regular sofa seat is 17 to 18 inches high, so both are low, but four extra inches matter when you stand up many times a day. For parents, grandparents, or anyone with knee trouble, we recommend 8-inch.

When does 4-inch make sense?

  • A prayer room or reading corner where people sit on the floor anyway.
  • A children's playroom. Low seats are safer for toddlers who climb.
  • A second seating area used a few times a week.
  • A traditional look. Older Gulf and Levantine majlis rooms use thin floor mattresses.
  • Budget. The 4-inch L set costs $200 less than the 8-inch.

Do both come with the same pieces?

Yes. Backrests, armrests, floor cushions, ottoman, and rug are the same in both versions. Only the base cushions change. Covers on both have hidden zippers and are machine washable at 30°C (86°F).

Can I make a 4-inch set thicker later?

You can stack two 4-inch bases, but they will slide unless strapped. Replacing the bases costs more than buying 8-inch from the start. If you think you might want the height, buy it now.

Frequently asked questions

Is 8 inches thick enough to sit on all evening?

Yes. The base is firm, high-density foam, so it does not flatten to the floor under an adult.

Is a 4-inch floor sofa bad for your back?

Not by itself, but it puts your hips level with your feet, which some people find tiring. A backrest against the wall helps. If you have back or knee pain, ask your doctor and choose the higher seat.

Which one do most customers choose?

For living rooms, the 8-inch L-shaped set is our most ordered.

Does thickness affect shipping time or cost?

No. Both ship free by UPS Express and arrive in the US in about three business days after a one-day preparation, with duties and taxes included.
