Arabic Floor Sofa Sizes: How to Measure Your Room for an L- or U-Shaped Majlis

An L-shaped majlis needs a corner of 102 by 75 inches. A U-shaped one needs a wall of 130 inches with 75 inches on each side. Here are the exact dimensions and a five-minute way to check your room.

An L-shaped Arabic floor sofa needs a corner measuring 102 inches (260 cm) along one wall and 75 inches (190 cm) along the other. A U-shaped set needs a back wall of 130 inches (330 cm) with 75 inches (190 cm) of depth on both sides. The seat itself is 27.5 inches (70 cm) deep.

What are the dimensions of each layout?

Layout Long edge Short edge(s) Base cushions Seats on bases
L shape 102 in / 260 cm 75 in / 190 cm 2 5 to 6 adults
U shape 130 in / 330 cm 75 in / 190 cm each side 3 8 to 9 adults

Both layouts come with 4-inch (10 cm) or 8-inch (20 cm) thick base cushions. Thickness changes the seat height, not the footprint.

How big is each piece?

Piece Inches Centimeters
Base cushion 75 x 27.5 x 8 (or 4) 190 x 70 x 20 (or 10)
Backrest pillow 37 x 16 x 4 95 x 40 x 10
Corner backrest pillow 27.5 x 16 x 4 70 x 40 x 10
Armrest pillow 20 x 8 x 8 50 x 20 x 20
Floor seat cushion 27 x 20 70 x 50
Ottoman 24 x 24 x 8 60 x 60 x 20
Rug 47 x 71 120 x 180

How much room do you need in total?

Add walking space in front of the seat. Thirty inches of clear floor is comfortable; the rug (47 x 71 in) and ottoman sit inside that space.

  • L shape: a room or corner of roughly 9 x 9 feet works. That is the 102-inch wall plus a little margin, and 75 inches of sofa plus 30 inches to walk.
  • U shape: plan for about 11 x 9 feet. The 130-inch back wall sets the width; 75 inches of side seating plus a walkway sets the depth.

How do you measure before ordering?

  1. Measure the walls at floor level. Baseboards, radiators, and door trim steal inches that a tape held at eye level will miss.
  2. Mark the footprint with painter's tape. Tape a 27.5-inch-deep strip along each wall the sofa will touch.
  3. Check doors and vents. A door should open fully without hitting the seat. Floor vents under a base cushion will be blocked.
  4. Walk the room. If you can cross it without stepping over the tape, the layout fits.

What if my wall is shorter than 102 inches?

You have three options. Use the two base cushions in a straight line along a longer wall (150 inches). Use a loveseat or single sofa. Or ask us for a custom size; base cushions can be made shorter to fit a specific wall.

Does the sofa have to go in a corner?

No. The pieces are separate, so an L set can sit as two facing benches, one long bench, or a corner. Backrests need something to lean on, so a wall behind them is best.

Frequently asked questions

How high is the seat?

Eight inches (20 cm) on the 8-inch sets and four inches (10 cm) on the 4-inch sets. With the backrest, the top of the back is about 24 inches from the floor on an 8-inch set.

How deep is the seat?

27.5 inches (70 cm). With a 4-inch backrest behind you, the usable depth is about 23 inches, deep enough to sit cross-legged.

Will it fit in an apartment living room?

An L set fits most living rooms of 10 x 12 feet or larger. For studios, a loveseat or single sofa uses one wall only.

Can I add a third base cushion later to make a U?

Yes, as long as the fabric is still available. Message us with your order number and we will check.
